EY Canada adds on-site quantum computer for clients

EY Canada has expanded its quantum computing operation with an on-site quantum computer, giving the firm a larger in-house base for client work in Canada.

The new system will be used to address business problems in optimisation, fraud detection, forecasting and large-scale risk management. The set-up is intended to let clients process sensitive workloads within Canada rather than through cloud-based systems hosted elsewhere.

The investment marks a step beyond pilot projects and internal testing as professional services firms look for practical commercial uses for quantum systems. EY Canada said dedicated in-house access would give organisations more control over where data resides, how it is managed and who can access it.

That is likely to be a key issue for clients in regulated sectors. The firm pointed to financial services, energy, supply chain and government as areas where organisations are trying to manage operational complexity alongside data sovereignty, privacy and regulatory demands.

EY Canada presented the announcement as part of a broader effort to move quantum computing into routine business use. It has been applying a Client Zero model, under which it develops and tests quantum-enabled tools within its own organisation before offering them to clients.

"We're shifting the conversation on quantum computing from concept to practical use for our clients in Canada and globally," said Biren Agnihotri, Chief Technology Officer, EY Canada.

"Quantum computing has the ability to solve complex challenges that classical computing alone cannot address. By combining local and global talent, ecosystem collaboration and leading-edge in-house quantum infrastructure, we're accelerating how organizations translate quantum innovation into real-world capability," said Agnihotri.

Data control

In practical terms, owning the system in-house could help clients facing strict privacy and security rules. Cloud options do not always meet the requirements of every industry or regulator, particularly when workloads involve sensitive financial or operational data.

The new machine is also intended to support the testing, refinement and validation of quantum-enabled applications. EY Canada identified financial optimisation, advanced fraud detection, data protection and large-scale system planning as areas where it expects the technology to be applied.

Quantum computing remains at an early stage for most commercial users, and many industry projects are still focused on research and proof-of-concept work. Against that backdrop, consulting and advisory firms have been building teams and partnerships to prepare for demand from clients exploring where the technology could have a measurable effect.

EY Canada said the latest investment builds on a recent quantum patent and forms part of EY's wider spending on artificial intelligence and next-generation technology. Globally, the network has committed more than USD $3 billion to those areas.

Broader push

The firm linked the quantum investment to work in decision intelligence and risk analysis, where it believes more advanced computing methods could eventually complement existing systems. It also said the addition of an on-site quantum computer strengthens Canada's place in a broader international quantum sector supported by government funding, university research and private investment.

Canada has become one of the more active markets in quantum technology, with research groups, start-ups and established companies working on hardware, software and applied use cases. That ecosystem has encouraged large advisory and technology groups to establish a local presence rather than rely solely on international partners or remote access to machines outside the country.

For clients, the significance may lie less in raw computing power than in access and governance. Dedicated use of a machine based in Canada could appeal to organisations that are cautious about sending data across borders or need to demonstrate tighter internal oversight when testing emerging technology.

EY Canada also described the move as part of a longer-term effort to strengthen its internal technology base. The aim is to support both client service and internal experimentation as quantum tools develop.
