HID has joined the Board of Directors of the FIDO Alliance, with Sean Dyon serving as the company's primary board delegate.

The appointment brings a company with a long track record in physical and digital identity to the industry group behind the open standards used in passkeys and passwordless sign-in.

HID will contribute to board governance and strategy discussions as the alliance works on standards, certification priorities and broader interoperability across authentication systems.

Dyon is Vice President of the Authentication Business Unit at HID. His appointment comes as organisations move passkey projects beyond pilot stages and into wider deployment, increasing focus on lifecycle management, interoperability and the links between physical and digital identity systems.

The FIDO Alliance develops standards intended to reduce reliance on passwords. Passkeys based on those standards are designed to resist phishing because they do not send reusable passwords and tie authentication to a specific device and origin.

Board role

The alliance's board helps set direction for its standards work and certification agenda. HID's contribution will draw on its experience in enterprise authentication, digital credentials and identity systems used by business and government customers.

HID has been a member of the FIDO Alliance since 2015. During that time, it has taken part in working groups covering FIDO2, digital credentials and consumer deployment. It has also worked with the alliance on research into identity security and convergence.

The company also makes FIDO-certified authenticators and authentication platforms. That background is relevant as more organisations try to make passkeys work across mixed technology environments and multiple vendors.

Research cited by the two organisations suggests adoption is already well under way. According to a report from HID and the FIDO Alliance, 93% of organisations are at some stage of passkey adoption, while 65% report high or expert familiarity with the technology.

The shift from smaller tests to broader rollouts has increased attention on how standards translate into day-to-day deployment. Large organisations often need to manage employee onboarding and offboarding, device replacement, recovery processes and access across different systems, all of which can complicate passwordless projects.

Andrew Shikiar, Executive Director and CEO of the FIDO Alliance, said HID's presence on the board would bring practical input from enterprise deployments.

"HID has been a longtime and valuable contributor to the FIDO Alliance, and we're pleased to welcome them and Sean Dyon to our Board," said Andrew Shikiar, Executive Director and CEO of the FIDO Alliance.

"As enterprises scale passkey deployments, HID's perspective on converged physical and digital identity will help us bring the security and usability benefits of passkeys to a wider range of environments," Shikiar said.

Enterprise focus

The appointment reflects a broader push across the authentication market to turn passkeys from a consumer-facing convenience into a standard tool for workforce and enterprise access. While the standards are established, many businesses still face operational questions around account recovery, cross-platform support and integration with existing identity infrastructure.

HID's role on the board is expected to focus on those practical concerns, particularly in environments where physical access systems and digital access controls increasingly overlap. In many organisations, identity management now spans office entry systems, workstation sign-in, application access and credentials used on mobile devices.

Dyon said those real-world issues would shape the company's contribution.

"As enterprises scale passkeys and passwordless authentication, the standards behind them must address the real-world challenges of deployment, lifecycle management and interoperability," said Sean Dyon, Vice President of the Authentication Business Unit at HID.

"The FIDO Alliance has been instrumental in advancing open standards for secure, passwordless authentication, and we are proud to contribute to that work. Because our business spans both physical and digital identity, we understand these challenges across the full range of how people authenticate. That is the perspective we intend to bring to the table," Dyon said.

HID employs more than 4,500 people and supports customers in more than 100 countries through its international offices. It is part of the ASSA ABLOY Group.
