Netcraft appoints Darren Lee to board for growth push

Netcraft has appointed Darren Lee to its Board of Directors, adding a veteran cybersecurity executive to its leadership team.

Lee spent more than 14 years at Proofpoint, holding a series of senior leadership roles during a period of rapid expansion. During that time, the business grew from less than USD $100 million in annual recurring revenue to more than USD $2 billion, according to Netcraft.

Before joining Proofpoint, Lee was Chief Executive Officer of information governance company NextPage. He moved to Proofpoint after it acquired NextPage and later worked across several of its key business lines and strategic initiatives as the company expanded its global workforce to more than 4,000 employees.

The appointment comes as Netcraft looks to strengthen its position in brand protection and digital risk protection. It says Chief Information Security Officers and security teams at major companies, banks, and government organisations use its services, and that it has blocked more than 230 million multichannel threats to date.

Netcraft also says it takes down nearly one-third of the world's phishing sites. The company has expanded beyond takedowns into efforts to disrupt criminal infrastructure before it is used.

Growth focus

The board appointment highlights Netcraft's focus on scaling the business as cyber attackers increasingly use artificial intelligence in phishing, brand impersonation, and fraud campaigns. Lee is expected to bring experience in product strategy and go-to-market operations as the company continues its international expansion.

Market position

Netcraft operates in the online brand protection and digital risk management market, where companies face growing pressure to respond to phishing, spoofing, and other external threats that target customers as well as corporate systems. The sector has attracted increasing investment as organisations try to identify and remove malicious domains, fake websites, and other infrastructure used in scams.

The company says its business is built on a large pool of threat data and long-standing relationships with internet infrastructure providers. That network supports efforts to identify and disrupt harmful online activity across multiple channels.

The appointment reflects Netcraft's effort to add operational experience as it moves into a new phase of development. Lee brings experience spanning early-stage leadership, acquisition integration, public markets, and large-scale growth within a cybersecurity company.

It also underlines how established security vendors are seeking board-level guidance from executives with direct experience scaling product portfolios and commercial operations in a crowded, fast-moving market. Netcraft says Lee's background will support its efforts to broaden its offering while expanding its global presence.

During his time at Proofpoint, the company completed a US initial public offering and expanded substantially in revenue and headcount. That period made Lee a well-known figure in the cybersecurity sector, particularly among companies looking to combine product expansion with international growth.

Netcraft says it processes more threat data than any other provider and remains focused on detecting and disrupting external threats used in phishing and fraud.
