Schlage has launched the Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt in Canada, its first lock with Schlage Converge technology.

The device is also Schlage's first product to support Matter over Thread, a connectivity standard for smart home devices.

The Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt will be sold online and in stores at The Home Depot across Canada for CAD $549. It uses Ultra Wideband with Apple Home Key to enable hands-free unlocking for compatible iPhone and Apple Watch users.

The system is designed to unlock as a user approaches the door by assessing movement such as speed, direction, and motion. Schlage is positioning it as an alternative to geofencing and other proximity-based entry methods commonly used in connected locks.

The launch marks a notable step for the brand as smart lock makers try to make entry less dependent on tapping a phone, opening an app, or entering a code. The use of Ultra Wideband also reflects a broader shift in consumer electronics toward more precise location awareness in home access and digital key systems.

David Perozzi, General Manager, Allegion Home, outlined the company's position on the launch.

"At Schlage, we are committed to delivering innovative, reliable, and high-quality products and experiences to our customers who trust us to secure their homes," said David Perozzi, General Manager, Allegion Home. "Sense Pro is a testament to this dedication, offering hands-free unlock and enhanced convenience for everyday life, while upholding the Schlage legacy of trusted security."

Support for Matter over Thread means the lock can connect with compatible smart home systems using a standard intended to improve interoperability between products from different vendors. It can pair with a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub, including certain Apple TV 4K and HomePod models, for lower-latency performance.

Users can also manage the lock through the Schlage Home app over built-in Wi-Fi. The app allows remote locking and unlocking, the creation of up to 250 access codes, daily locking schedules, and auto-lock settings.

The app also offers three hands-free unlocking modes called intuitive, touch, and delay. The lock can also be controlled through Apple Home and included in wider household automations alongside other connected devices.

Battery backup

The lock has an expected battery life of up to six months under standard use. It includes low-battery alerts on the touchscreen and in the mobile app.

If the batteries are depleted, the device has a USB-C jump-start port that provides temporary power. That feature addresses a longstanding concern among buyers of connected door hardware, where battery failure can leave users locked out unless a physical override or emergency power option is available.

Schlage also said the product is Aliro compatible. Once certified, it is expected to support Aliro digital keys in Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet, extending hands-free unlocking to Samsung and Google devices with Ultra Wideband and tap-to-unlock to devices using NFC.

Apple compatibility requirements are relatively specific. Hands-free unlocking with Home Key requires an Apple Watch Series 6 or later, excluding Apple Watch SE, running watchOS 11.5 or later, or an iPhone 11 or later, excluding iPhone SE second and third generation as well as iPhone 16e and 17e, running iOS 18.5 or later.

Those requirements underline a practical constraint in the smart home market, where advanced features often depend not only on the lock itself but also on newer phones, watches, and home hub hardware. Even so, support for Matter and planned support for Aliro-based wallet keys suggest Schlage is aiming to broaden compatibility beyond a single ecosystem.

Schlage is an Allegion brand. The launch adds to competition in the smart access market, where hardware groups are trying to balance convenience, integration with major mobile platforms, and reliability in everyday residential use.
